I’m trying to install Node.js for NodeSchool and cannot get the user path correct

By William Gottschalk

When I installed Node from their website I got the following message:

Node was installed at
/usr/local/bin/node
npm was installed at
/usr/local/bin/npm

Make sure that /usr/local/bin is in your $PATH.

When I type echo $PATH I get:
/Users/WillG/local/node/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/git/bin:/usr/local/git/bin:/usr/local/bin
I try and execute the code to download the NodeSchool tutorials but I keep getting error messages. How can I change my $PATH to get usr/local/bin in there?
